In terms of what not to do, we recommend that you avoid silicone primers that have too much of a slip. The foundation can tend to slip, slide, and not melt into the skin properly when using a silicone primer versus a moisturizing or illuminating primer. Not all foundations are created equal. Because of this, you never want to dip your brush directly into the container before applying. How to Shade Match HD Skin Foundation If you’re having a difficult time shade matching and have the ability to swatch the product in-store, apply one foundation in each undertone to your face starting toward the middle of your cheek and working toward your jawline.  By covering a larger surface area, you’ll be able to pick up the subtle tone changes across your face.  Let the foundation sit for a few moments, and select the swatch that appears to “disappear” into your complexion the best.  This will determine your undertone. If you or your client have problematic skin with active breakouts or discoloration, select an area of the face that has the most discoloration to swatch across.  This will allow you to find the shade that best matches your entire face and that can neutralize any discoloration. When it comes to skin prep, the Make Up For Ever team recommends oil-based skin prep products to maximize this foundation’s wear-time and overall appearance. Fragrance & Pigmentation Level for HD Skin Foundation Of course, many pros and makeup lovers will wonder how the new formula compares to previous formulations, and while the pigmentation load percentage has not been released, the Make Up For Ever team let us know it’s more pigmented than its predecessor.  Additionally, the new formula has a slight fragrance that is naturally derived from Japanese Sencha Tea, and it makes up less than 0.15% of the formula, so it is safe for use on sensitive clients. How to Apply HD Skin Foundation Whether you're a professional makeup artist or want to add it to your personal routine, you can use a range of tools to apply it to achieve a beautiful finish. A brush is recommended, but you can build up more coverage with a sponge. Work swiftly and in small areas, as the foundation sets fairly quickly. For true medium coverage, you should use approximately one pump per each side of your face. How to Apply HD Skin Foundation with a Brush: Using a brush, start at the center of the face and sweep outwards to the temple, then in a "C"-like motion, sweep downward and along the jawline to the chin. Repeat this process until you have achieved the desired coverage on the lower half of the face is achieved.   Next, start between the eyebrows and brush around the perimeter of the face and all the way down to the chin. Blend the remaining foundation onto the nose. How to Apply Foundation & Build Coverage with a Sponge: Using a sponge, start at the center of the face where your cheek meets your nose. Move outward, just like with the brush application method, and continue to blend down the jawline and toward the chin. Blend across the nose and then between the brows and upward and outward on the forehead and around the perimeter of the face. To build coverage on problem areas or to achieve full coverage, build coverage with a sponge in tapping motions. How to Set HD Skin Foundation: The beauty of HD Skin is that it doesn't have to be set. However, if you do want to set it, it pairs perfectly with Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Matte Setting Powder. This long-wearing look features some of her most popular products, so keep reading for a step-by-step breakdown on how to achieve the look! Create a Glowy Complexion Danessa prepped her model's skin with Beauty Oil for long-lasting hydration and gave her model an extra boost of glow with Prism FX Hydrating Lotion. Next, she created a perfected base with Vision Cream Cover and sculpted with Balm Contour in the shade Light 2. To set everything in place, she used a thin layer of Evolution Powder in shade 1. PRO Tip: Prism FX is a pro favorite illuminating moisturizer that contains squalene and Vitamin E to improve your skin with each wear while prismatic pigments reflect the light to give the look of smoother skin and to lightly blur imperfections. It is available in three shades to suit every complexion; the Original shade has slight pink tones, while Peach and Gold offer subtle color-correcting benefits. Use it in place of your usual moisturizer and primer for a lit from within glow, or mix it into your foundation for an even glowier look. Create an Exaggerated Cat Eye with Plum Wine First, Danessa applied Plum Wine ColorFix to a mixing palette, dipped a flat medium-sized domed eyeshadow brush into it, and applied a layer to the lid before diffusing the edges with a Cozzette S175 Eye Contour Brush. Using light circular and windshield-wiper motions to blend the product, she lightly buffed Plum Wine almost all the way up to the brow bone. Next, she used a pencil brush to smudge plum wine along the lower lash line and dragged out the product into an exaggerated cat-eye shape. Apply Blush & Highlight Danessa used the "Blush Draping" technique to add a pop of color and definition to the face. Using the MYKITCO Pro My Perfect Powder Brush 0.11 brush, she applied a mixture of Plum Wine ColorFix and Bread N Butter Vision Flush to the apples of the cheeks and blended upward to the temple and just above the brow. For highlighter, she used the same brush with Tiara Vision Flush for a pearly glow. PRO Tip: To apply an ultra-pigmented cream product like Danessa's Vision Flush, use a smaller yet fluffy brush like MYKITCO's Pro My Perfect Powder Brush 0.11  for precise yet diffused application. First, apply a small amount of product to a mixing tray and lightly swipe and tap the brush across the tray to evenly distribute the product. Then, use light tapping motions from the apples of the cheeks to the temple and above the brow bone. It's Twin Flames Time! To finish the look, Danessa used her multidimensional Twin Flames in the shade Star Ruby from the Love Potion Inifinite Gemstone Kit for an irresistible sparkle. She applied a small amount of Star Ruby directly to a fluffy eyeshadow brush and brushed it onto the eyelid on top of Plum Wine. Using a pencil brush, she added Star Ruby to the middle part of the lower lash line. Finally, she took a Cozzette S185 Mini Eye Blender Brush and added a golden highlight the inner corner. To lock in the look, she set the makeup with a light spritzing of Danessa Myricks' Dewy Forever Mist setting spray, and that's it! Her model is Camera Ready! It's that time of the year! Many of us are grabbing for a pen and some paper to write our resolutions for the new year, but what types of resolutions can we make when it comes to beauty? Turns out, there are plenty. Keep reading to be inspired for an extra beautiful year ahead! Stay Organized While it can be nice to have a variety of products and tools to choose from, it can also be quite overwhelming. There's nothing like sifting through a sea of products to pinpoint a single item. Even worse, if you don't have a good organizational system in place, it can lead to lost products. We have all been there. We've spent hours searching for that one brush or our favorite lipstick only to get frustrated and end up buying a new one. If you're a pro, you already know that keeping your kit organized will help you work more efficiently, and clean up and pack up time will be a breeze. Clean Your Brushes Weekly This essential routine is one makeup artists do regularly, but it should be a part of every beauty routine even if you're not applying makeup on others. While it's easy to put off washing our tools, it can also shorten the life of your favorite brushes or, even worse, can allow bacteria to grow. Infections from personal makeup brushes may not happen often, but they can be damaging to the most sensitive areas of our face.   A good rule of thumb is to keep a good brush cleaner and a brush sanitizer handy at all times and to make it part of your regular schedule. One of the best tips for making brush cleaning more enjoyable is to find a brush soap that you enjoy the smell of. Think of it as a self care spa moment for your brushes and your senses! Most makeup products have the suggested shelf-life once opened listed on the packaging, but we know not everyone reads them. To confuse things further, some products may expire faster than others based on their ingredients.   On average, pencil-style products should be replaced every 1-2 years. Liquid or gel eyeliners are generally best between 3-6 months. For powder products like eyeshadow and powder, you can usually use them for about 3 years. A tell-tale sign that they're ready to be replaced is that they won't blend as easily or if they become chalky and brittle. Liquid foundation tends to have a shorter life between 6 months to 1 year, and mascara can range between 3 to 6 months. If you're unable to find the suggested time frame for your product, there are a few simple questions to ask yourself to determine if it's time to part ways: Has the product changed in texture or how it applies Has the product developed a different scent If it's a pencil-style product, does the product seem to break off easily each time you sharpen it Does the product taste different While it's not a perfect science, if you answered "yes" to any of the questions above, you may be better off saying goodbye. PRO Tips: 1. Write the date of purchase on the outside of each product. 2. Federal law requires all makeup products to feature a PAO (Period After Opening) or BBE (Best Before End Date) symbol. A PAO symbol applies only if the shelf life is 30 months or more. Any less and the product will feature a BBE symbol. 3. Products made from natural ingredients will include an expiration date that applies even if unopened. 4. If you can’t find an expiration date, PAO or BBE label, check for the manufacture date. This will help you to know if the product is nearing expiration, as many unused cosmetics lose their quality over time. When it comes to beauty trends, each year brings a new wave of looks that are fun to try, but this year, brows have without a doubt taken center stage! From extra fluffy to colorful and glittery, we're breaking down the most popular brow trends we've seen and are recommending our favorite products to achieve each look. Brow Blocking Whether you're going for an editorial look or trying to create a SFX masterpiece that requires a new 'do for your brows, brow blocking is a technique you'll want to learn! It's a method makeup artists and enthusiasts use to cover up their existing brows in order to create a smooth surface to draw in new brows or to cover with makeup to complete a particular look. First, start by using a spatula to apply a thin layer of Spirit Gum to your brows and brush them up and flat against your skin with a disposable spoolie. To help them adhere to your skin, spin the spoolie toward your skin to help them get as close as they can to your skin. Next, take a small amount of SynWax and warm it up slightly between your fingertips and smooth it down on top of your brow hairs. This will help reduce the hair texture and create a smoother surface upon which you'll create a new brow or apply foundation to. Press in Colorset Powder to help set the wax, and then use the Mehron Tattoo Cover Ring to color correct, if needed, and to start a flesh-toned base. You can mix and match shades to create one that's close to your skintone! Use the Mehron Celebre 12 Color Cream Palette to lay down a layer of foundation that matches your skin tone and set with the Mehron Celebre Powder. For a professional artist, consider keeping the matching 12 Color Powder Palette in your kit, as it has a wide variety of shades for your clients! Now you're ready to draw a new brow! Using a very fine angled brush or sturdy brow brush, use the Mehron Brow Palette to draw fine hair-like strokes. It's okay if your brows aren't 100% symmetrical! Voila, you're done blocking and creating your brow! However, the fun doesn't stop there. Make sure you also have the products needed to remove the makeup, as SynWax and Spirit Gum may remove hair is it's not removed properly. Start with a cream cleanser to remove the makeup that you layered on top of the brow. Next, use Spirit Gum Remover and gently remove the Spirit Gum. Feathered Brows Feathery wispy brows are probably one of the hottest brow trends of the year. These high-fashion and often angelic-looking brows are perfect for any event or makeup look and are relatively easy to create. This brow look requires products that give you precise control over your brow shape and allow you to draw fine wispy strokes without the stronger definition you'd get from a pencil or the pigment of a powder. Kevyn Aucoin True Feather Brow Marker Gel Duo is ideal to achieve this style. This dual-ended product comes in several different shades with a fine feathered tip for application and a spoolie brush and gel to soften edges and set for precise and natural hair-like strokes. Start at the arch of the brow to build color and extend out to the tail end. Fill in any spaces with the marker end and set brows with the gel end. To give the brows the fluffy effect use the clear eyebrow gel to brush the hair in the opposite direction the hair naturally goes. Precise Yet Natural Brows Natural brows have always been in, but this look ups the precision while maintaining a “my brows but better” appearance. Creating the precise yet natural brow look is usually done by using a combination of a spoolie brush or eyebrow gel to shape and tame the brows, adding powder for color, and using brow pencil for creating hair-like strokes. It also usually involves having the innermost part of your brows being lightly filled in and the definition and depth of color increasing as you move outward toward your brow “tail”. There are plenty of natural, light powders available to fill in your eyebrows, but the best one for you depends on your desired brow color, shape, style and texture. If you’re looking for a brow pencil for definition with pigmented, blendable strokes, we recommend the Senna Powder Brow Styling Pencil. The dual-ended pencil and spoolie brush combo make it optimal for filling in brows of any shape or size. Start by applying lighter pressure on the inner parts of your brow and increase the pressure during application to achieve a stronger and more pigmented look as you move outward. The eyes are the window to the soul, so let’s make those beauties stand out! Every client you encounter will have a different eye shape, and it’s important to know the best tips and techniques for enhancing their natural beauty.  “What eye shape do I have?” This is a question we get a lot, so we’ve outlined each of the most common shapes of eyes below with tips on how to effectively accentuate different eye shapes, as well as which products will help you achieve maximum results for each of the different eye shapes. Educate yourself, get inspired, and stock your kit with these eye makeup essentials for a versatile kit anywhere you go.  The Different Eye Shapes:  Deep set eyes Wide set eyes Protruding eyes Close set eyes Upturned eyes Downturned eyes Hooded eyelids Monolids Deep Set Eyes Having deep set eyes simply means the eyeballs are set further back into the skull, creating a more prominent brow bone. For deep set eyes makeup, opt for lighter, highlighting colors to brighten the lid and to create the illusion of more eye space. The key with deep set eyes and makeup is to de-emphasize shadows caused by the brow bone. This technique also gives your falsies something to cling onto, which makes application much easier. Step 2: Apply The Top Lashes When you get your lash kit, you’ll notice a top row and bottom row. As you may have guessed, the top row is designated for the top of your lashes, and the bottom row is designated for underneath your top lashes. To get started, take the first top row lash and place it as close to the lash line as you can get. Step 3: Apply The Bottom Lashes Next, you’ll take the bottom row lash and place it underneath your top lashes, as close to the lash line as you can get. The magnet strips will connect as you do this, locking your lashes in place. If you need to adjust, simply grab the corner of each lash strip to gently to pull to reposition. If the lashes are completely off, just gently pull them off starting from one corner of the eye and reposition.
