There's just something about seeing Santa Claus that instantly brings back memories and gets us in the holiday spirit, but what's even more special for us is all the preparation that goes into creating this beloved character! Between the fake beards (for some) and white hair makeup, rosy cheeks, and sometimes fake wrinkles, it can be a lot of work to create the Ho-ho-holiday magic!

Step 1: Add Wrinkles and Other Facial Features to create the Perfect Santa Claus Makeup Look
An easy way to make your Santa Claus makeup look more believable is to create a complexion that is wrinkled from years of jolly laughter, smiles, and weathered from decades of delivering lots of toys to good boys and girls!
Caykeface used the Ben Nye Essential Matte Foundation Palette because it offers a wide range of shades to create darker lines and lighter shades to highlight to make more realistic-looking wrinkles. To keep the makeup in place, she used Ben Nye Neutral Set Powder and pressed it in using a blending tool onto the areas of her face that move more and a brush to dust across the rest of her face.
Step 2: Add in Extra Highlights and Shadows to Create a More Realistic Aged Appearance
Using a fine detail brush, she made a few of the wrinkles look even more deep-set using the finely milled powders from the Ben Nye Studio Sculpt & Contour Palette. Just like she did with the cream foundation palette, she started with the deeper shade and then used a lighter shade to add a bit of dimension and highlight while also softening the lines.
Step 3: Apply the Crepe Wool Hair & Dye It Using Ben Nye White Hair Color for the Perfect Santa Claus White Hair!
Caykeface created her beard, mustache, and bushy eyebrows in advance using Ben Nye Crepe Wool Hair (in shades Ash Blonde and Light Gray). This allowed her to create a natural-looking variation in hues. The hair comes braided together upon arrival, but you can gently unravel it and trim it to the desired length.
To attach the faux hair, she used a q-tip to apply a light layer of Spirit Gum adhesive to the desired area and allowed it to dry slightly until it became tacky and attached the pieces of hair. Next, she sealed down each piece with a thin layer of spirit gum to the edges of each faux hair layer. She set the adhesive with a thin layer of powder and further concealed the disguise with foundation for a natural transition. To further hide the transition, add a little bit of crepe wool hair on your skin where the beard meets your skin to help hide the seams.
PRO Tip: Any time you work with Spirit Gum or any other SFX adhesive, have the proper remover (in this case Spirit Gum Remover) handy to ensure you keep your skin (and body hair where the item has been applied) in tip-top shape!
Since the hair she attached wasn't white, she used Ben Nye Hair Color in Snow White to give it a true white appearance.
Step 5: Create the Classic Santa Claus Flushed Cheeks Using a Blush
While the blush you use is a matter of preference, Caykeface used two different shades of Jillian Dempsey Cheek Tint (in Rosy and Scarlet) to create extra dimension to the cheeks. She applied the lighter shade Rosy first and then added a pop of color to the apples of her cheeks and across the bridge of her nose using Scarlet to create the "I'm Cold" Makeup Trend effect that mimics being outside in chilly temperatures!
To set the entire look in place (not demonstrated in the video but an essential step for extra long wear), she gave her makeup a light spritzing of Ben Nye Final Seal and let it dry.
After adding a pair of wire-rimmed glasses and the perfect Santa Claus outfit, Caykeface is the perfect Camera Ready Santa Claus!
OPTIONAL - Step 6: Add Extra Details (if desired) - Like Icicle Gel!
A true SFX Santa Claus makeup look wouldn't be complete without an added effect! Caykeface took her Santa to the next level with a fun product called Kryolan Professional Make-Up Icicle Gel. This thick gel is easily applied with a spatula and is semi-transparent giving it an icy effect! It was the perfect touch to make this Santa look like he just got back from delivering lots of gifts on a frosty white Christmas Eve night!

One of 2022's Most Googled Halloween Costumes: Stranger Things Inspired Makeup Look | SFX Tutorial ft. @caykeface

Step by Step Instructions from @caykeface for her Stanger Things Halloween Costume and Makeup
Take Pros Aide on a cotton swab and cover your brows with 2 coats and powder them with Colorset Powder.
Using a q-tip dipped in Pros Aid, draw the outline of a "crack" that you want the bat to come out of onto your forehead and another crack down the face. Work in small sections for best results.
Roll modeling wax into a worm shape with your fingertips (it helps warm the wax) and apply over the tacky adhesive.
Repeat this until you create the crack effect down the face. To create a smooth transition from the wax to your skin, lightly mold the wax with a spatula that has a thin coating of vaseline.
With Liquid Latex on a cotton swab, start to draw clock numbers on your face with the latex. Apply about 5 layers of liquid latex build-up to look like those numbers are raised from your skin.
Coat modeling wax with Pros Aide and then set with powder. This will allow you to be able to apply makeup on top of it with ease.
Apply foundation shade over face and contour to make your face look sunken in.
Insert cotton balls into the nose to protect from liquid latex fumes
Start to build up the bat with cotton and latex. Unravel the cotton ball into a strip, and rip the strips up and layer cotton and latex till you have your bat shape
Apply a thin layer of modeling wax over cotton/latex and smooth the wax with vaseline and your fingertips before sealing the bat with another layer of Pros Aide and powder.
Paint crack to represent the upside down with body paints (I used: red, yellow, and brown)
Paint the bat with body paints (black, white, gray)
Glue on a DIY batwing (made of toothpicks and 6 layers of liquid latex)
Paint a few squiggly lines coming out of the “crack” with Pros Aid. Apply wax on top (I mixed wax and black shadow to make a black “worm”). Paint liquid latex on top of the worm to seal and to make it shiny.
Paint on some red blood tears and pop in some white contacts (optional)!

The Most Googled Halloween Makeup in 2022 (& How to Create the Looks)
Halloween is just around the corner which means you're likely scrambling for a last-minute look (especially if you're reading this blog), but don't worry Boo, we've got you covered with all the makeup and tools you'll need to recreate these trending looks.
The Top 10 most googled halloween makeup looks are:
10. Harley Quinn (watch our tutorial!)
9. Cowboy
8. Cheerleader
7. Rabbit
6. Pirate
5. Fairy
4. Stranger Things
3. Dinosaur
2. Spiderman
1. Witch (we have several witch tutorials for you to follow along to!)
To view the full list of the most Googled Halloween Costumes, click here.
10. Harley Quinn Makeup Look for Halloween
Harley Quinn makeup looks were popular in 2021, but this equal parts easy and "cute" costume is not only fun to create but also requires only a few key items! A special thanks again to SFX Artist @caykeface for creating this amazing video tutorial. Be sure to check it out to see all the products she used!
9. Cowboy (or Cowgirl) Makeup
When it comes to a great Halloween costume, a Cowboy or Cowgirl is always a fun option! An essential part of this popular Halloween Makeup Look is the slightly dirty/dusty looking makeup that suggests you just got done working a long day on the ranch or had a scuffle with someone that was eyeing your land.
Ben Nye Grime FX Character Powder is perfect to create that worn and weathered look! Available in a variety of sizes, there are shades that perfectly ash, coal, and plains dust to amp up your Halloween Costume!
PRO Tip: To make this look more belieable, consider adding extra bronzer to the face to mimic the tan you'd get from being outside working hard all day and even a few freckles using our freckle makeup!
8. Cheerleader Halloween Makeup
Show off your Halloween S-P-I-R-I-T with the perfect Cheerleader Halloween makeup! Of course, there isn't a single "look" that defines what a cheerleader should look like, but what comes to mind for us is extra long lashes, glitter, and super glossy lips.
7. Rabbit Halloween Makeup
Of course, you could always opt for your average Halloween Rabbit Makeup Look, paint on a bunny nose and whiskers, and call it a day, but for those that really want to wow their friends, consider this!
A Rabbit Nose Prosthetic will give your look the extra dimension you crave, and it's easy to apply. If you want a slightly less prominent nose, opt for this super cute cat nose! Watch the easy to follow "How to Apply a Prosthetic or Transfer" tutorial @brittanylessard created for us to learn how to apply whichever nose you pick!
6. Pirate Halloween Makeup Look
Ahoy, Matey! A Pirate Halloween Costume has plenty of makeup options like rotten teeth, weathered skin, and perhaps even a fresh wound! We highly recommend checking out our tutorial on how to create a wound to complete your perfect pirate costume.
5. Fairy Makeup Look
We love a good Fairy Halloween makeup look or costume because it allows the wearer to be as creative as they'd like with glitter, ethereal shifting shades of makeup, and more. This year, the viral sensation Danessa Myricks Infinite Chrome Flakes would be a great option for multi-dimensional looks that stay on for hours, or take your glitter game to the next level with Lemonhead.LA's glittery products (did you know they've also been used on the set of hit series Euphoria!?)!
Complete your fairy makeup look with elf ears and shimmering multichrome makeup from Karla Cosmetics, Lethal Cosmetics, or Danessa Myricks!
4. Stranger Things Inspired Halloween Look
We are firm believers that videos are the best way to share Halloween inspiration, so be ready to be awestruck by @caykeface's Stranger Things inspired look she created in partnership with us!
View this post on Instagram
A post shared by Caytee | Makeup Artist | Content Creator (@caykeface)
3. Dinosaur Halloween Makeup
At first mention, a Dinosaur Makeup Look may seem intimidating, but we promise it's easy when you have the right makeup! First, determine if you only want to use face or body paint to paint your dinosaur skin or if you want to add texture to make it look more scaly and textured with Wrinkle Stipple.
PRO Tip: Since most movies and shows depict dinosaur skin as being weathered and textured, using a sea sponge or a makeup sponge that has been torn to expose jagged and irregular edges to apply your makeup can help create a more "realistic" appearance!
2. Spiderman Makeup for Halloween
We can't remember a year when Spiderman Makeup wasn't trending for Halloween, so we've created a list below of the Spiderman Makeup Essentials!
To create the perfect (and easy!) Spiderman Halloween Makeup Look, we recommend:
A Bald Cap for a perfectly smooth head
Mehron Barrier Spray to spritz on to clean skin before painting (it helps to slow sweat production that would make your makeup run!
Mehron Paradise Makeup Palette in Basic for all the colors you'll need
Mehron Paradise Makeup Brushes for easy application
A good SFX Setting Spray to seal in your look
Start by applying the bald cap, and once applied, spritz your skin lightly with Mehron Barrier Spray. Next, take a makeup pencil to lightly outline the eyes and different areas you'll paint different colors. Next, using the brushes, mix in a little bit of water to activate the makeup and paint. Allow each layer to dry before adding the next. We recommend also filling in any larger areas before creating the darker black outlines, as it will prevent the deeper shades from mixing with the lighter ones.
When the makeup is dry, use the fine line brush to paint on a spider web pattern. If you don't love freehanding, use a lighter toned makeup pencil to draw on the pattern before painting the web.
Witch makeup look by Rachel Roll for Mehron Makeup
1. Easy Witch Halloween Makeup
The #1 most Googled Halloween costume should come as no surprise! Witch costumes and witch makeup is always a great idea for Halloween! Thankfully for you, we have several witch tutorials including a Glam Witch and a Gory Witch, so pick your poison and enjoy watching them!

Step 1: Follow Your "Normal" Makeup Routine
Since this look features a painted-on headband and the iconic Wonder Woman symbol across the neckline, go ahead and apply your everyday face makeup as you normally would! To follow the exact steps Kelly used, follow the routine below.
Start with a light misting of Inglot Makeup Fixer Spray and apply Laura Mercier Flawless Fusion Ultra Longwear Foundation for medium to full coverage. Use your favorite contour product, blush, and concealer before setting the look with Ben Nye Luxury Powder. This ultra-finely milled powder will make your complexion look airbrushed while keeping oiliness at bay. Fill in your brows and create a soft smokey eye using the Melt Cosmetics Four Twenty palette, and apply your favorite lip color.
Step 2: Paint the Headband
Start sketching out the headband with a nude makeup pencil before painting it with various shades of yellow from the Mehron Paradise Makeup AQ Palette. Once the makeup has dried, use a fine liner brush to outline the headband with black. Use the Melt Cosmetics palette to shade to add depth and shadows along the outer edges of the headband.
Step 3: Create the Wonder Woman Symbol
Outline the Wonder Woman symbol along the center of your neckline and upper chest and begin painting outside of the outline using the ProAiir Hybrid Fluorescent UV Reactive Paints. To blend different colors together, give the makeup a quick spritz of the Inglot Makeup Fixer and dab a makeup sponge where the colors meet to create a gradient. Fill in the Wonder Woman symbol with the Mehron Paradise Makeup AQ and allow it to dry.
Next, it's time to add a bit of texture and fun to the Wonder Woman symbol! Using a splatter brush or a toothbrush, use the spattering technique to add splashes of color. Dip the bristles into the ProAiir Hybrid Fluorescent UV Reactive Paint colors of your choice, and run your finger across the bristles (with the bristles facing your body) to allow speckles of paint to enhance your look. If you want to leave the symbol itself free of any paint splatter, hold a piece of paper over the design while performing this technique.
Outline the inner part of the Wonder Woman symbol with a thin line of UV reactive paint to make it pop! Repeat this process for the headband, and viola!

Step 1: Apply A Bald Cap to Achieve the Perfectly Smooth Minion Halloween Makeup Look
First and foremost, applying the bald cap correctly will really set the tone for your entire look, so pay close attention to these bald cap application tips!
Wet hair and slick back with hairspray into either a tight braid down your neck or a low pony, if you can’t braid. Bobby pin your hair to your head, trying to make it as flat as possible.
Open the new bald cap, locate the front and insert head - face first. Pull the cap down your face and back of head. With a liner pencil draw a line about the eye brows and down the sides of the face leaving plenty of the cap to glue to your skin.
With a small pair of scissors, start by cutting the bald cap straight up the center of the face. Then cut along the lines you made with the liner pencil.
Peel up a small piece of the bald cap from the center of the forehead, lay down a 1-inch light layer of Pros-Aide. Allow to dry slightly so that it's tacky, and attach the bald cap to forehead. Continue the process for the whole bald cap, gluing down the sides, neck, and back of head.
Take Pros-Aide on a cotton swab and go over the bald cap line where it meets the skin to blend it in.
Powder the adhesive to remove shine.
Taking creme paints, create your skin color and color corrector. Begin to apply over bald cap to camouflage any hair color peeking through.
Powder to set.
Step 2: Block Your Brows and Paint the Perfect Minion Shade of Yellow & the "Outfit"
Now that your bald cap is in place, it's time to block your eyebrows and start painting!
Apply about 3-4 layers of prosaide over the eyebrows to block them out. The thicker the brow, the more Pros-Aide you'll need. Powder them lightly to remove the tackiness.
With a liner brush, lightly sketch out the minions features and clothing. Then paint everything in with body paint.
Use body paints and eyeshadows to add the details to the features and clothing. The good news is that since the look is supposed to look cartoon-like, you won't need to add too many details!
Step 3: Create and Apply Your Minion Halloween Look Accessories
Now that your bald cap is on, your brows are blocked, and the majority of your look is painted on, it's time to get creative and to create your accessories! Caykeface opted for a classic minions look with oversized goggles and spiky hair.
@Caykeface used poster paper create black pieces of hair and some goggles.
Glue on your hair with Pros-Aide.

Step 1: Prep Your Skin & Block Your Eyebrows
First, cleanse your face and do not moisturize. Instead, use Mehron Barrier Spray to create a sweat-proof barrier that will allow your makeup to last longer. Next, use your favorite method and products to block your eyebrows.
Step 2: Map Out the Skull with a Makeup Pencil
Take a makeup pencil and draw an outline of the jaw bone, eye socket, nose socket, teeth, clavicles, and neck. Alice prefers to use a brown pencil instead of a black pencil because she finds it easier to paint without worrying about the black makeup mixing in with the paint she uses to fill inside.
Step 3: Use the Water-Activated UV Neon Paradise Paint Palette to Color the Outline for the Skull
Using the Mehron Paradise Brush Set, use your favorite shades to cover the outlines you just drew with the pencil. Alice likes to create an ombre effect and use different colors along each line because it gives a more interesting look to her skull. For the teeth, fill in each tooth completely, as you will outline them with black later.
Once the outlines have all been painted, allow them to dry. Next, fill in the eye sockets, inside of the mouth, and inner part of the nose socket with Black Paradise Paint. Once that area has dried, paint the neck and check outside of the bones you created earlier.
Step 4: Highlight the Outlines with White Paradise Paint
Using one of the finer detail brushes from the Mehron Paradise Brush Set, add a few white lines to the rainbow outlines you painted on in step 3. You can even add a few highlights to the teeth!
Step 5: Add UV-Reactive Effects to the Look
Taking a medium-sized Paradise Brush, take the shade that looks white from the UV Neon Palette, and fill in the “blank” areas of your face. Although the shade looks white, it’s actually UV-Reactive and will glow under the black light! Allow the paint to dry and set with setting spray, and that’s it! Your Neon Skull is Camera Ready!

Step 1: Paint Your Face Using Mehron FX Fantasy Cream Makeup
First, cleanse your face and use a light spritzing of Mehron Barrier Spray to create a sweat-proof barrier that will allow your makeup to last longer. Next, mix a pale pink using Red and White FX Fantasy Cream Makeup. Apply all over the face using a makeup sponge.
Step 2: Contour the Face
Using a fluffy blush brush, apply a pink powder pigment to the face and contour your face like you would normally - under the jaw bones, under the cheekbones, the sides of the nose, and around the perimeter of your face. Blend the contour by dusting the brush around the entire face to make it look more cohesive.
Step 3: Create a Red and Pink Smoky Eye
Using a red and pink powder pigment, create a smoky eye by focusing the pigment on the outer half of the eye and the crease. Use a fluffy eyeshadow brush and blend well. Add the same shades to the bottom lash line
Step 4: Create an Ultra-Defined Nose and Brow
Using a dense eyeshadow brush, use the same pigments from Step 4 to create a dramatic nose contour that extends all the way up to just under the inner brow bone to create a more cartoon-like effect.
Take a black pressed pigment and a liner brush to create small hair-line strokes to create a strong defined brow.
Step 5: Line Your Eyes with Black FX Fantasy Cream Makeup
Using a fine-tipped liner brush, create a cat-eye effect with a large wing that extends beyond the eye and a triangle shape on the inner corner to create an exaggerated eye look. Next, draw smaller outward pointing “triangles” on the lower lash line to resemble cartoonish lashes. Take a white makeup pencil and fill in the water line to make your eyes look bigger.
Step 6: Add Fine Details to Finish the Glampire High Look
Mix the White and Red Fantasy FX Cream Makeup to create a bold red lip color and paint your lips. While the paint is still slightly wet, paint on the Black Fantasy FX Cream Makeup as a lipliner and diffuse slightly. To enhance the cartoon-like effect of the look, use a small dab of white to highlight the lips, and paint a small red heart onto your cheek.
Finish the look by painting and shading the ears and building up the contours and highlights more to your liking. That’s it! Your Draculora Makeup Look is Camera Ready!

Step 1: Prep Your Skin
First, cleanse your face and do not moisturize. Instead, use Mehron Barrier Spray to create a sweat-proof barrier that will allow your makeup to last longer.
Step 2: Paint Your Face Green for the Ultimate Witch Makeup Look
Using a sponge and Mehron ColorBlend Stick in the shades Green and Ogre Green, focusing the darker Green shade around the perimeter of your face and contours of the cheek, nose, and eyes, and applying the lighter Ogre Green to the higher points of your face. This will make the green base look more “natural” compared to a flat one-shade face. To build up more dimension, use the White ColorBlend Stick and add highlights to the tops of the cheekbones, under the eyes, and anywhere else you’d use concealer.
Once you’re happy with the base, mattify the look using a powder puff and ColorSet Powder.
Step 3: Contour the Face & Add Eyeshadow to Your Witch Makeup Look
Using a contour brush, use a pressed pigment in a deep green or black shade to contour the face. Use Paradise Paint in Black to paint on the brows.
Create a smoky eye with various shades of green. If you want to carve out the look and create a cut crease, use the White CremeBlend Stick for added drama. Next, line your eyes and waterline with black eyeliner to add depth to the look, and use the Black Paradise Paint to create a long-lasting and dramatic winged liner look. Once the liner has dried, lightly blend the eyeshadow at an angle from the outer edges toward the inner lower half of your upper lid to ensure your eyes look as big and bright as possible.
Highlight the brow bone with the white CremeBlend stick. Apply false lashes or mascara and a dramatic black lip using the black Paradise Paint.
PRO Tip: Let each layer dry before applying more makeup on top to ensure you do not muddy the shades together.
Step 4 (optional): Add 3D Gel for Wet Tears or a Sweat Effect
If you want to add an extra touch to level up your Witch Makeup Look, consider using Mehron 3D Gel - a special effects product that’s perfect to look like tears, thick beads of sweat, or other bodily fluids.
Start by uncapping the jar and placing it in the microwave or a hot bowl of water for about 10 seconds. If it’s still solid, microwave it for another 5-7 seconds. Repeat until it has reached a liquid consistency. Allow it to cool for at least a minute to ensure it’s not too hot for application.
Drip the product wherever you want onto your face using a spatula, and that’s it, your Witch Makeup Look is Camera Ready
PRO Tip: Be VERY careful while heating and temperature testing 3D Gel. When the product has reached a liquid consistency, lightly test a small amount of product on the back of your hand where your nerves are the most sensitive.
You're Camera Ready!

Step 1: Moisturize Your Face & Body to Prevent Staining
First, cleanse your face and body and moisturize well. Brain MUA does this to prevent the makeup from staining, however, you can also use Mehron Barrier Spray to create a sweat-proof barrier that will allow your makeup to last longer and will prevent it from staining. Next, use your favorite method and products to block your eyebrows.
Step 2: Mix Your Perfect Blue Alien Shade and Paint!
Using a blue and white Mehron Paradise Paint, create a light blue to paint your entire face. He used a 3 parts white, 1-part blue ratio. Brian used a stainless steel mixing palette and a Mehron AQ Brush for maximum coverage on his skin.Paint your entire face and desired amount of your body. Contour the face using a deeper blue version of your paint, and add white paint to areas you want to highlight
PRO Tip: When covering large areas, use less water when mixing your perfect shade to make it more opaque.
Step 3: Enhance the Nose, Eyes, and Contours of the Blue Alien Face with Powder Makeup
Using a fluffy brush, use a medium blue powder pigment to carve out the perimeter of your face, cheekbones, jawline, and eye sockets. To create a wider nose effect, start the nose contour at the inner corner of your eyes and draw down to your nose. Do not follow your normal nose contour. Next, fill in your brows with the blue pigment only drawing from around the outer half outward. Once you’re happy with the overall shape, deepen the brows and nose contour with a black powder pigment.
Application Tips: Avoid using too much liquid latex because it will become gloopy and hard to work with. If you’ve added too much, simply add a few pieces of torn tissue.
Step 4: Add a Rosy Hue to the Lips and Nose
Using a rosewood-hued powder pigment, add a light dusting to the lips, the tip of the nose, and cheeks! It’s important to use the same shade for both to enhance the look.
Step 5: Add Depth and Dimension with Details to Your Blue Alien Look
Lightly tap a fluffy eyeshadow brush into the black and blue powder pigments and draw faint vertical lines from the top of your forehead that go down and toward the center of your face. Next, create angled lines from the outer part of your cheeks that run almost parallel to your jawline toward the center of your face. Diffuse the edges to create a soft blended look. If you’re painting your body as part of this look, create long angled lines from the top of your shoulders that go down and slightly inward toward your breastbone. Finally, taking a brush with stiff bristles and white Paradise Paint, use the spattering technique to splatter white speckles all across your face and body. As the paint dries, lightly dab your finger across the makeup to create more irregularly shaped freckles. Repeat this step using a dark blue shade of Paradise Paint. If you want to take the look to the next level, use the drybrush technique with Paradise Paint to amp up the contours and some of the lines on your face for added dimension. That’s it! Your Blue Alien is Camera Ready!

Step 1: Moisturize Your Face & Body to Prevent Staining
First, cleanse your face and prep the skin for SFX makeup application. We recommend using Mehron Barrier Spray to create a sweat-proof barrier that will allow your makeup to last longer. Next, use your favorite method and products to block your eyebrows.
Step 2: Map Out the Zombie Wounds Onto Your Face for Your Zombie Makeup Look
Take a makeup pencil and draw an outline of the wounds you want to create. Get creative and place them wherever you want! Shanice prefers to use a brown pencil instead of a black pencil because she finds it easier to paint without worrying about the black makeup mixing in with the paint she uses to fill inside.
Step 3: Use Mehron Extra Flesh Wax with Fixitive A to Create Zombie Wounds
Using the rounded dull end, layer the wax inside onto the wounds you drew in step 2. To give a 3d effect to your wounds, layer extra wax and create ridges that curve inward toward the center of each wound to represent dead and decaying flesh that has been ripped open, just like in a real wound! If you want to make the texture of the wax a little smoother, lightly tap with your finger.
Once you’re happy with the wounds, seal the wax by brushing on a thin layer of Fixitive A. This will remove any tackiness and will allow you to paint the wax with ease.
Step 4: Paint the Zombie Skin with Mehron Bruise Wheel
Mix the green tone with your favorite foundation to create the perfect shade of zombie skin for your ultimate zombie makeup look. Apply it to your skin with a foundation brush. Be sure to save some of this shade so you may use it in step 5.
Next, mix the blue-violet with your foundation mixture and use the same brush to paint in the eye sockets to make them appear sunken into your face. Continue to use this shade to contour your face paying extra close attention to the cheekbones and other stronger contours.
Set the face with Mehron ColorSet Powder and a powder puff.
Step 5: Paint the Zombie Wounds with Mehron Bruise Wheel
Mix various shades of red and red violet from the bruise wheel and apply with a variety of smaller brushes to give you depth and detail. Concentrate the darkest shades toward the outer edges of each wound along the ridges you created in step 3.
Taking a fine detail brush, mix a redding shade and paint fine squiggly and branching lines that radiate outward from each wound to represent veins. Then, take a sponge and lightly tap into the green foundation shade you mixed in the previous step. Wipe off any excess, and lightly pound the sponge on top of the veins to make them appear a little softer and as if they’re just below wthe skin’s surface.
PRO Tip: Create any any bruise effects you’d like during this step using the green foundation shade mixed with violet or red, and blend into the skin well for a more realistic effect.
Step 6: Add Mehron Coagualated Blood and Blood Splatter to Add Texture and Shine to Your Zombie Makeup Look
Mehron Coagulated Blood is a shiny, thick, and syrupy SFX blood that instantly elevates any special effect! Using the rounded end of your spatula or a q-tip, add the coagulated blood inside the wounds where you want them to look like fresher healing wounds.
Next, take Mehron Blood Splatter and spritz onto your face to represent where blood may have misted out of your Zombie wounds during a gnarly fight! This blood will dry down once applied. The closer you hold the spray bottle to your face, the more concentrated the blood splatter will look.
Add a wig or style your hair and add any extra accessories you’d like, and voila! Your Zombie Pin Up Makeup Look is Camera Ready!

Step 2: Map Out Where You’re Going to Place the Homemade Prosthetic
Take a makeup pencil and draw an outline above your brows and on your cheekbones to indicate where you’re going to build up the homemade prosthetic to make your cheeks, brows, and orbital bone more prominent.
Step 3: Create and Apply the Homemade Prosthetic Using Liquid Latex
Using a stainless steel palette, add a few drops of Liquid Latex onto the palette, and rip apart pieces of tissue to dip into the Liquid Latex to lightly coat it. Next, apply it to your skin in thin layers onto your skin, and use a spatula to smooth out the edges. For an added effect, create creepy striations and lines across the cheek by dragging the spatula down across the cheekbones and toward the lips.
Once you’re happy with the brow bones and cheeks, build up your chin, too!
Once you’ve built up the prosthetic, allow it to dry and set with a powder puff and Mehron Colorset Powder to remove any tackiness.
Application Tips: Avoid using too much liquid latex because it will become gloopy and hard to work with. If you’ve added too much, simply add a few pieces of torn tissue.
Step 5: Time to Paint the Prosthetic
Using a fluffy brush, paint the prosthetic with Mehron Paradise Paint in Olive. Build up in layers on the entire face, lips, and around the eyes. Add highlight to the cheekbones, brow bones, and even the cupid’s bow with White Paradise Paint. Blend well using light tapping motions of the brush with leftover Olive paint.
Dry brush a deep purple and black around the eye sockets and to outline and contour under the cheekbones, the nose, lips, and chin.
Step 6: Create and Add the Fake Lip Sticthes
Using the liquid latex and torn tissue, roll together thin strips of tissue into thin “strings” that are a little more than an inch long. Set them with powder and paint them with black makeup.
To adhere the “stitches” to your lips, add a dot of liquid latex to where you want to attach it just above and below your lips, and attach each end of the stitch to the adhesive. Hold it in place gently for a few moments until it’s attached.

Camera Ready's Best of 2021: Special Effects Makeup
When it comes to creativity and makeup, there is nothing more awe-inspiring than a good SFX transformation! Do you have any of our Top SFX products for 2021 in your collection? Let's find out!
Adhesive
A good adhesive can be the glue that holds your entire look together (literally and figuratively). However, there are a few important steps you'll want to keep in mind when using it. If you are applying it on others, or if it is your first time using it, it is always a good idea to check the ingredients to ensure you or your client are not allergic to any of the items listed. A patch test is a good way to ensure the person does not have an adverse reaction to the adhesive being used. It is also important to keep a professional adhesive to always have a remover on hand.
3. Pros-Aide® Adhesive “The Original”
Pros-Aide has been used in thousands of projects in filming major motion pictures, stage, and TV. It is a water-based medical-grade adhesive that can adhere prosthetics and appliances to the skin for long periods without irritation because it is safe to use on all skin types and even on sensitive areas. It gives a strong bond that lasts all day and night and has high water resistance. Pros-Aide is also commonly used by pros to block out eyebrows.
2. Ben Nye Glitter Glue
Anyone who has ever worked with glitter knows how messy it can be. Rest assured, when you use Ben Nye's Glitter Glue, your glitz isn't going anywhere! The durable, lightweight formula applies neatly and thinly with a built-in applicator brush. It is sturdy enough to tack down sequins, small rhinestones, and accents alike. This alcohol-based solution removes easily with a mild cleanser or with soap and warm water.
1. CAT Complexion Atelier
Our number one adhesive blurs the lines between the beauty and SFX world. Whether you're applying lashes or another form of embellishment, this world-famous lash adhesive is latex-free and waterproof and will lock everything in place. In a pinch and need to secure rhinestones, foils, or small accents? This adhesive is up for the task!
Honorable Mention-Ben Nye Liquid Latex
Although Ben Nye's Liquid Latex just barely missed this year's list, we could not mention adhesives without mentioning this versatile product. It is a staple in any special effects artist's kit! Use it for sealing modeling wax, creating your own 3D appliances, applying directly to the skin for an aged look, or creating realistic blisters and wound effects. In case you missed our Back to the Basics Series, check out our blog Three Easy Ways to Use Liquid Latex, SFX Tutorial with @caykeface to learn tips and tricks on working with liquid latex.
Special FX
Whether you're into film production, cosplay, or enjoy creating special effects at home, we've got you covered with the following top SFX products.
3. Ben Nye Fresh Scab
Ben Nye's Fresh Scab is just what the wound ordered with its natural ability to "scab over!" The brownish tint gives an ultra-realistic look while the jelly-like consistency is perfect for adding dimension to create a clotting effect. This product is corn-syrup based with a fresh peppermint flavor that is safe and pleasant to use in and around the mouth.
2. Kryolan Eye Blood
The name says it all. Kryolan Eye Blood is a fake blood that is eye safe. It is one of the most coveted products in the SFX world and is perfect for special effects on film, theater, or for creating super cool content on social media. You can level up any look with just a few drops of this product. Although it is safe to use in the eye area, never use this on an irritated eye or with contact lenses. See this product in action as @kristen.b.artistry demonstrates how to use Kryolan’s Eye Blood in our Back to the Basics: SFX Tutorial Series, Pt. 16 - SFX Blood.
1. Ben Nye Nose & Scar Wax
Drum roll please…Ben Nye's Nose & Scar Wax takes the number spot for Best Special FX Product and has been a favorite for film, theater, and SFX enthusiasts for decades. The possibilities are endless with this pliable, yet firm modeling wax. Once warmed gently, you can use it to manipulate the appearance of your skin to imitate flesh wounds, create a “broken nose,” a witch's chin or even bullet holes. It comes in three translucent tints to resemble real skin.
Honorable Mention: 3rd Degree Silicone Modeling Compound
Not only has 3rd Degree Silicone Modeling Compound made it as an honorable mention on this list, but it was also an October Staff Pick for our Beauty Advisor, Chelsie. "When it comes to creating cuts and wounds or even blending the edges on a prosthetic piece, 3rd Degree Silicone has saved me so many times," she explains. "The "Clear" formula allows my cuts to look more life-like, and I can also mix in or apply foundation on top of it to be a perfect match to the skin. This blends like a dream and gives you a little bit of playtime before drying down."
Theatre

TikTok & Instagram Halloween Trends You Need to Try
If you’re feeling stuck deciding on a new Halloween costume this year, there’s no better place to get inspiration than TikTok and Instagram. These beloved apps have become a hub for creatives of all genres, but especially for makeup artists. From artists just starting out to professionals, they provide a platform for everyone to show off eye-catching, detailed looks, & introduce their favorite products
Whimsical Fantasy Face Paint
Fairies, butterflies, and whimsical folklore have always consumed the Cottage Core side of TikTok, but they’re reemerging this season as a trendy Halloween costume. Notably, there’s a viral trend where creators use big, heavy brush strokes to outline their faces in fairy wings before adding more details. Add decals like pearls, rhinestones, small flowers, crystals, and leaves to add to the realism of your whimsical look. Check out this video by Sophie Hannah on TikTok to get whimsical butterfly fairy inspiration with a spooky twist for your Halloween makeup.
While realistically, this trick may not work for everyone, it’s a great way to create a base outline before adding in more details. You’ll want to have a dense brush and liquid cosmetic-grade makeup that will last all night long, like Mehron’s Liquid Makeup for Face Body and Hair or the Ben Nye MagiCake Aqua Paint Palettes. Using a high-quality, precise liner like the Stila Stay All Day Dual-Ended Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner to outline detailed wing designs adds to the clarity of the look as well! Once you're done designing your look, be sure to spritz with setting spray to lock in your hard work!
@allison_sfxtek and @mandie.strangefx are serving up some spectacularly spooky looks!
Coraline Button Eyes
If you love animated movies, there’s no way you haven’t seen Tim Burton’s stop-motion wonder, Coraline. With such striking designs and characters, it’s no wonder these fascinating button-eye looks have dominated the algorithm. For detailed steps, watch Siana’s Coraline makeup tutorial on TikTok. For some major inspiration, you can also visit @allison_sfxtek and @mandie.strangefx on Instagram.
You’ll just need a blue wig, a yellow raincoat, and black buttons for eyes (or makeup that passes) for this look. But then, it’s all up to you to create the tiny details perfectly captured in this animated movie — Coraline’s freckles, eyebrows, lips and nose can all be contoured, dotted and shaped to look just like the claymation masterpiece. Products like the Skin Illustrator Zombie Palette and Mehron Cream Blend Stick are excellent options for adding realistic details, sharpening out your featuresm, and hollowing out your cartoonish eyes.
Skeletons & Hollowed Out Cheeks
Skeletons are a tried-and-true Halloween costume, but you can get some ideas on TikTok to kill your look. For example, adding decals, glitter or colorful contour and details can make a basic black and white skull look like an ornate work of art. Watch Felicia Marie’s excellent video on TikTok showing how she created her dramatic skeleton look.
For a proper skeleton makeup look, dramatize the naturally occurring negative space on your face with a heavy contour, like the NYX Highlight and Contour Pro Palette.if you're aiming for a more flesh-toned skeleton or the Mehron INtense Pro Pressed Powder Pigments for a wide variety of shades. Then, draw or paint vertical lines on your mouth to create the teeth for an added skeletal effect. You can also blackout your nose for an extra impact with a product like L.A. Girl Gel Glide Eyeliner Pencil in black. If you’re looking for glitter to add some pop, Mehron’s Paradise Glitter is an excellent affordable option available in tons of colors.
All About Clowns
From Harley Quinn to the infamous It to clowns from your nightmares, these characters comprise several of the trending Halloween makeup looks on TikTok. However, you don’t pop on a goofy red nose for these looks — plenty of talented makeup artists have managed to create sleek yet horrifying clown looks that would scare anyone to their core. Here’s a step-by-step tutorial of Pennywise and a fresh Harley Quinn look by Siana, for example.
If you’re looking for a simple clown look, you can add dots and triangles tastefully around your eyes to mimic a circus effect, like Haley Buix on TikTok. You’ll want a product that can deliver precise, intricate details, like the Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner. If you want something more dramatic, you can draw inspiration from Nathalie Figueroa’s purple clown makeup look on TikTok. If you want purple, red, or any other color to accent your clown makeup, try pigmented products like Make Up Forever’s 12 Flash Color Case or the Ben Nye Pressed 8 Color Palette in Divine Madness.
Haunted Pumpkin Face Paint
Colorful accents come in many shapes and sizes, whether you’re using colored contacts, powders, lashes, or classic face paint. Liquid, cream and cake makeup have all been Halloween fan favorites for many years now, but they haven’t lost their popularity — and novelty — for spooky looks. You can order colored paint tubes or palettes with multiple shades, and you can design tons of different costumes around them. For example, Elsie on TikTok created this unique haunted pumpkin makeup look with colored contacts, orange shadow and black liquid face paint.
To emphasize your colored creations, darken your lids with the Viseart 12-Color Eyeshadow Palette or the Ben Nye Theatrical Eye Shadow Palette for a look that will last all night long. If you’re looking for excellent liquid face paint, check out the Mehron Fantasy FX Makeup, which is available in a variety of color options.
Corpse Bride
Another one of Tim Burton’s famous stop-motion movies, The Corpse Bride, has received noteworthy attention online as a trending Halloween costume. Emily, the bride herself, is the perfect candidate for makeup artists dabbling in contouring, face painting, and SFX art. Check out Marina Eloise’s beautiful rendition of Emily on TikTok, featuring illusion paint and vivid details to make her look like the actual character. If you prefer to look at a photo for inspiration, check out @raeofsunshinebeauty on Instagram!
For an iconic corpse bride look, you’ll need blue hues that accurately capture Emily’s ghoulish, deceased look. The Ben Nye Pressed Eye Shadow in Navy Blue is the perfect shade to deepen your eyes and cheeks, and the Graftobian Dish of Face Paint in Nepture Blue is ideal for your base layer. Finally, to paint on your wide, animated eyes, use Ben Nye’s Creme Color in White or the iconic Ben Nye Clown White for a striking, pigmented shade that will last all night (or wedding) long.
